What is a MIDI Breath Controller?
You can compare this to the classic modulation wheel that almost all midi keyboards have. A breath controller send data, much like the modulation wheel, but in a much more natural, and more importantly, musical way.
Essentially a breath controller, breathe life into your instruments. It really adds another dimension to the performance. But here’s the best part.
TEControl MIDI Breath Controller
This particular breath controller by TEControl, is not ONLY a breath controller. They have actually added 3 more sensors inside it so you can send 4 kinds of expression from this amazing device:
Breath, which is the air you blow into this piece….Bite…which measures how hard you bite it with your teeth. Nod, which senses when you nod your head up or down. And tilt, which does the same when you tilt your head from left to right. So you can then map all these 4 forms of expression data into your software instrument, and choose what to control.
Why use a Breath Controller?
So why should you invest in a breath controller? Well, I can give you 2 reasons from my personal view:
- It saves you so much time when composing music, because it is much faster to record expression in your performance, than sitting for hours to manipulate automation data with your computer mouse and keyboard.
- It is incredibly fun to use, and you get a sense of power and control, like you are actually playing the instrument itself.
- Because it really adds that human, musical and life-like performance over your instruments. Which to me, is what music is all about. Adding emotion, dynamics, variation, movement, and soul to your music.
